Yeah, it seems odd to me unless the publisher denied the initial pitch unless it was "punched up" so to speak, or something like that, but no idea lol. Went and found the comment I was referring to:

So this is manga exclusive which take on a different direction from the get-go which I prefer a lot more, since it will stand out among the slops out there lol

I'm the type to take these things with a few grains of salt, but they linked a tl later in the thread & others reinforced that the original was a generally worse story than the first chapter implied. Allegedly the MC was originally just bored as shit, not depressed at all, so I'll be holding out hope that whoever changed Ch.1 gets more input over the rest of the story moving forward lol. I'm thinking of checking out the WN TL sometime during the week to see how it really is & setting my expectations from there... If the next few chapters seem to stick close to it without that initial spark returning, then instead of reading for a "series that initially seemed promising" number of chapters before giving up on it, I might only go for a "typical isekai dumpster dive" number of chapters instead, lol.
