You're not looking at it from the very modern and Western viewpoint.For Japan, is killing in self-defense (and in defense of children who would otherwise be sold into slavery and worse) not a thing, culturally? I'm kind of baffled here.
Modern West has been hyper-Sensitized to violence in a way that is alien to everyone else and alien to all the people of history.
Since his family is from pre-1900s fantasyland, they also see killing as completely natural and unpreventable, like a chicken killing the snake after her eggs.
It's more surprising that the Mother wasn't actively praising him for it, than it was surprising that a man raised in Japan was over-sensitive to his own survival.
