Even if you don't know the plan, the whole "empty villages full of resources" is suspicious AF. Anyone on the defensive would either put the villages to the torch or bare them up of anything useable to negate resources to the enemy.
And now they "conveniently" find a refugee group not far of one the villages? That stinks of a trap. That the snobbity nobles are too dumb to realize fine, but there's a veteran with them. He should have noticed something's amiss.

@Korvalus i think he's purposefully letting the fatass fall into the trap so he can get more direct control over his (small) army without having a dumbass scream at him, because he wants more food, or decreasing people's moral. I also think that after the conversation he had with the prince he realised that the prince is ignorant and knows absolutely nothing of war, and thus is easy to control when the time comes.

wonder what he's going to do to the evil prince once the war is finished, the prince is responsible for the war and is actively part of it, if captured alive or he surrenders then MC is just going to be forced to let him go by the emperor so hopefully he kills him in secret and blames it on one of the nobles in the other faction, a drunken brawl or one noble trying to run away and the prince trying to stop him only for the noble to cut him down or something like that.

The Soldier of Rape

Refugees are most likely soldiers. They bloated them up with food, no women to relieve rape urges, so they know they'd chastely attack civilians and would want to capture them first rather than attack with intent to kill or cause serious harm to get the women alive. That means fatty should be easy to capture and can be used against them although somehow fighting back will be seen as rebellion even though its all a lie.

The troop leader from bad guy side said "I don't see any chance of us losing". Welp considering he is always close his eyes every panel I think I might doubt that. I think he is not seeing things clearly. 😎
