Two strange kids entered the mansion, but no one mentions that one of them was carrying a big ass sword?
True. I assume that they didn't realise it was a sword. Even for an adult, that sword is comically large, so for a child in the South it's so out of place that you wouldn't even perceive it (selective attention, see the invisible gorilla experiment). I was also wondering why, in the previous chapter while they were traveling, no one really seemed to notice the huge sword so I'd say that the cloth covering the scabbard was sufficient to hide what it was, even if the handle was still visible.
I'm hoping they're playing dead as the mercenary said "what a waste" and "they need retraining". Almark possibly already ambushed the forward party and have servants of the house play dead to ambush the rest. That's why the assault is not yet depicted. It'd be recounted from Almark's perspective next chapter.
Fingers crossed. I really like the butler.
I was pretty shocked to see the gruesome scene. It's quite the cliffhanger and I really wonder about what happened.
Unfortunately, I don't think it's that easy to play dead, because you still need to breathe, and this guy is calmly walking by and assessing the situation. Though I'm confused as to why he's walking on his own, unaware of where his men are. There are 4 guards dismembered at the entrance (apparently, they were quite ineffective) so I guess the mercenaries were together during a frontal assault, and then rushed in the mansion and separated to deal with the unarmed servants and find their target.
There are some other odd elements. The assault was at night, so I don't understand why there were so many servants in the corridor and the cook is all dressed up. Also, Almark was in a mercenary group who travelled with their family so wouldn't he have thought of finding a way to keep the civilians away from combat? The defensive spikes don't appear to have done anything.
In any case, if the assassins were indeed that successful, Almark and friends will be on the run.
