In a lot of books I've read, you either get married to get the financial support you need, live with a relative and be a disgrace, have the intelligence and write under a masculine pen name or teach, be a servant if you have the skills (which is really rare amongst nobles since they're only taught the basic ideas or none at all), or live in the red light district (this is especially in Asia).
