Keep in mind Japanese have a completely different type of earwax.
Similar to how they produce odorless sweat and can digest raw seaweed (not true of 100% of Japanese, but still).
Their earwax is flaky and white,compared to the yellow-brown sticky kind Westerners have. They can't use Qtips to clean their ears, and instead use scraping, shovel-like tools.
Coupled with the fact that their mothers (or older sisters...) Would often clean their ears when they were young, it brings back happy childhood nostalgia, and a warm, comforting atmosphere.
