I understand that Shou is super afraid of coming out, but I get so nervous that if they dont come out eventually they're gonna BE outed instead. Which will probably be much worse. That teacher definitely seemed to suspect what was up at least.

It isn't super clear why they get so flustered by the second kiss, but the way one panel shows Shou's knee jerking back (or up perhaps) and then Umi pulling back makes me think there was some accidental touching that might have bordered on tribbing.

That would definitely explain why they both spend the rest of the chapter in a perpetual state of blushing; if you accidentally rubbed up against your girlfriend's groin unintentionally, you sure would be embarrassed.

I'm most surprised that Shou had such strong feelings on the matter. I wonder why. It's not like she cares what people think. Well, she does, but I mean, she doesn't care enough to change her behavior, so this shouldn't be any different.

She might be trying to protect Umi from her friends' potential response.

I concur with this view. Rereading back the earlier chapters, it appears to be Umi who's more terrified of people finding out that she likes girls, tho she did asked a weirdass question to one of her friends.

Shou seems to fear her own weirdness affecting Umi's overall rep with her friends, Shou had few times pointed out that Umi has many friends, hence Chap 13 where she sort of suggested a break-up thinking Umi is better off without her. Shou wasn't bothered that they are both girls.

The girl in Shou's room had repeatedly commented about how Shou keeps seeking out Umi, which likely made Shou more self-concious about her being with Umi.

If you look back at page 24, you can see Umi was extending her left hand behind Shou and immediately after Shou gets flustered and jolts. Umi responds to it saying "Sorry, I got a little carried away..." So presumably, Umi reached her hand down below and touched her, and Shou got an immediate realization that what Umi was doing was more than just wholesome kissing.

This explains why they both ended up getting super flustered, and why Shou had to leave Umi and go back to her old room. Shou is finally realizing that what they are in is indeed a relationship and things could go to the next step.

I doubt that it had anything to do with any accidental touching, as Umi is clearly shown to be standing on both of her feet and only kneeling enough to kiss Shou in page 24.

I think the way Shou was shown to be very confused afterwards also supports the idea that Shou never fully realized the extent of their relationship and Umi touching her behind conveyed her what it meant. This explains her change in attitude with her and Umi sleeping together, contrasting to before where she easily slept with Umi while Umi suffered all night unable to sleep. Proud of my girl for coming this far seeing how she was in ch1...
