You know, when I think about it, those parents of theirs really deserve a lot of the blame too.

Not that Marie wasn't being a shitty person helping things along, but them directly inflicting such misery on both their kids really doesn't reflect well on them.

I believe in the original novel they straight up kicked Leon out after mistaking him for being gay. They were the ones that spoiled Marie rotten (Leon helped a little with this one), and by basically forcing her to drop out of college, they put her on track for the rest of her life.

By every account, they failed both their children and took the high road for it. Her garbage taste in men is still her own fault, but having friends in college would have made a big difference.

In japan there was some popularity poll for who was the most popular character that you'd like to see a story on, marie won, which surprised the author as marie is based on his own sister i believe.
Anyway he kept to his word and made the "marie side" story, which is basically if i remember right, if marie made different choices than she did in the original story.
This story is supposedly quite popular with the fanbase, though it heavily depends on what you think of marie (though to be fair, even marie haters say she's a much better character in these stories).

Why is the author surprised? Of course people like the Marie route. The original one was just a classic tropey overpowered MC–esque story like a lot of other stories. This one is at least creative.

The Marie route didn't exist back then, it was written because of that poll. I assume the author expected blind hate (like what you can see of some posters here) but most were curious what the story would be like if Marie was the main girl.

Like she is a petty anoying little sister. But like she didnt make him play the game till death.

In both series she basicaly blames herself of his death.

But if you read the WN he basically hyperfixated cause the game was hard and then he just tripped and died.

Even Leon himself blames her for that.

The mc is a working adult living alone but somehow failed to take care of his own health and so fixated on clear a game??? Bruh what kind of adult is that??? He already got kicked out of his parent house for years now so why he still even care about that? And its not a good enough reason to burn himself out by playing a shitty game.

He was kicked out because his sister hid her yaoi/BL stash in his room, she blackmailed him to clear it up, he wasn't doing so good on his own and wanted to get back or at least have some support from his family.
