In case anyone didn't 100% follow what was happening - currently same sex marriage, adoption, and in-vitro fertilization are all banned in Japan. However, Japan's birth rate is very low. LGBT rights activists correctly point out that lifting these bans would be a trivial way to help boost that birth rate, since it would allow for gay families. Conservatives tend to argue the opposite, i.e. that lifting these bans would "normalize homosexuality" and cause the rate to drop further. This is complete nonsense of course, but it leads to cable news shows "teaching the controversy," usually by having an LGBT activist and a conservative yell past each other for 10 minutes. If you're gay, it is very painful to watch these "discussions," since it makes clear society views your basic rights as negotiable. Our protagonist's girlfriend was right to shut the TV off, since watching that sort of thing doesn't solve anything and just makes you feel like shit.

I'm very much for ssm as long as it'll stop cunts marrying men and leaving after "serving" a legislatively appointed amount of time, like it disproportionately often happens here in the US. Forums and subreddits with centered around LiLLs are fucking horror stories.

But as long as there's very little to zero chance of wife's getting an alimony for herself, aside from child support (like it is in Japan) when it's appropriate then sure, go for it.

@twinklecake They have the right idea - banning same-sex marriage will force a subset of homosexuals to get with a partner of the opposite sex but the number would be so small since the population of homosexuals are small that it'd be negligible so erring on the side of freedom is the most logical sense from a utilitarian viewpoint because the major reason their birthrate is so low is the fact that they're basically slaves to their companies on top of suffering from western moral decay within the context of relationships between the sexes.

I heavily doubt that since replacement rate (as well as fecundity) is on decline all over industrialized world. That includes US where work ethics is more lax in comparison to Japan and Europe, where it's relatively nonexistent.
