It's a puppeteering spell yeah? Which means if the puppeteer dies there's no one to control her.
The possessed MC says that he'll have to kill him to undo the spell, assuming it will. But before that he asks him to undo it, the guy says that he needs his hands free to use magic... and proceeds to use magic anyway.
The man had no intention of dispelling the magic even if his arms were freed. And i mean, he didn't, he just left once he was unbound.
The wolf man at the end even said the spell was almost over, asking if the man lost focus. Which means if he dies, and had no focus—because you can't do that while dead—the spell would have resolved.
So all in all nothing was accomplished.
I don't need a Character to be some mindless slaughter, but I'd prefer, in scenarios where life and death are supposed to be at every turn, they are logical.
And if they aren't, well I would hope the writing for why is good.
