bro chills, sometimes ignorance is a blissThis will probably be the first and last time I write on Mangadex.
First of all, your opinions are not a universal truth. You wonder why this manga is rated so highly? Maybe simply because a lot of people enjoy it. So start from the idea that just because a work doesn’t appeal to you doesn’t mean it’s bad. Everyone has their own opinion, and yours is not more valid than anyone else’s.
The case of Rua:
People who hate the manga because of Rua, that’s fine. But saying the manga is bad because of her is completely false and dishonest. A character can be unlikeable while still being narratively interesting. In fact, Rua is by far one of the characters that makes the story interesting. Without her, the manga would probably just be a pretty generic romcom.
And for the people who don’t want a redemption arc are you serious? What’s the point of a story if one of the central characters never evolves? It would be terrible if she stayed exactly the same until the end. If you don’t want her to end up with Kazuka, fine, but she should at least grow and realize the harm she caused him.
I also saw someone say that she will die or commit suicide in the webnovel. If that’s really the direction the story goes, I would honestly find it disappointing. Making a controversial character disappear is often the easy solution. Writing the evolution of a character that many readers hate is much harder, but that’s exactly what makes a story interesting.
In short, Rua is clearly one of the characters holding the story together. She was created to be hated, and obviously that worked. I just hope she eventually gets a real redemption arc.
The harem:
Apparently a lot of people hate the harem genre. In that case, just move on. This genre has existed in manga for decades. And anyway, most Japanese harem stories don’t even end with an actual harem. Most of the time the story ends with just one heroine or sometimes none.
So most of the time it’s simply a narrative device to create rivalry and tension between characters.
Clichés:
If the clichés in this manga bother you, again, just move on. All of your favorite works are also full of clichés. Tropes and clichés exist in almost every story. They are part of how stories are built.
The word incel:
Nowadays this word is used for absolutely everything. As soon as something doesn’t please certain people, they immediately throw the incel label instead of actually making an argument.
We’ve already seen this happen with Reiji Miyajima, the author of Rent-A-Girlfriend. People started inventing a reputation for him and spreading rumors about him without real evidence, simply because they didn’t like his manga. At that point, it’s no longer criticism of a work it’s just attacking the author.
In the same way, calling a work incel simply because the male protagonist is awkward or imperfect, or because some female characters aren’t idealized, is a very lazy criticism.
Anyway, I’ll go back to my anonymity. Next time you criticize a work, just remember that your tastes are not a universal truth, that clichés exist in almost every story, and that people simply have different tastes.
If you want to criticize a work, at least do it properly with real arguments, not just it’s trash.
