I'm gonna say that it's a bit of Column A, and a bit of Column B. It's pretty much what Tio was aiming for, but she got a bit more than she bargained for.

There was a fucking hilarious instance of this in an erotica manga I've been reading. The characters are all thinking of ways to "spice things up" and one of them comes up with the idea of having the MC abstain from all sexual activity for a week. Of course, everyone teases him relentlessly. Finally, the day comes, and the woman who came up with the idea is sudeenly confronted with the MC. She literally has a ralphy-tee-hee-I'm-in-danger.gif moment. I nearly woke up everyone in the apartment when I saw it.

(And yes, she did indeed walk with a limp the next day or so afterward, but she's a real masochist so she felt it was worth it... but she won't do that again anytime real soon.)

Okay, fair warning: there's a LOT of mind-fuckery going on in this one because it's a small group in a survival situation. Fortunately it's nothing grim-derp. It just looks like fifty shades of gray on the surface - what they're trying to avoid is a worst case scenario where someone actually does break down and kill someone or commit suicide or both.

I might be mistaken what Kshatria meant but:
Depending on how many anime/manga you consumed you will notice that they have tendency to always demonize religion especially christianity. As if only christianity has double face i.e. being good on the outside but evil on the inside.

As for Japanese believing in god(s)? Shinto is more like a tradition (cultural thing) rather than a true belief in Shinto gods. For the most part Japan is atheist. Though they do have a strong growing community of muslims though.
