Guy is insecure but he doesn't know it yet. Whoever dare to compare themselves to others whether you think you are superior or not is already pathetic. He may look like he is in a higher social standing but the Shuji lives in his mind rent free.

Whereas, Shuji knows he is far from perfect but has come to terms and accepted himself and ready to face Miran head on.

I think the most confusing part is.. why? Shuji has gotten a couple panels spread out to show his distrust origin, Miran hasn't even gotten that other than like 1 line that implies they met in the past. So why does this random side character get a whole devoted chapter? What a weird decision that i dont understand

I think the author was trying to create a sympathetic/explanatory backstory for the other guy so that the audience wouldn't judge him so harshly as "generic top caste smart guy/pretty boy/athlete that everyone loves because he's handsome and perfect at everything" by demonstrating that he actually works really hard but found that instead of people recognizing his hard work they just treat him like a genius that coasts on his natural talent.

It also justifies/explains his specific attraction to Miran because she was shown to be the only person that recognized he was working hard instead of just being gifted.

The problem is that we do all of this and then immediately undermine it by still making him exactly the kind of shallow, entitled prick that he would've been without the character development. "I deserve Miran more than Shuji because I'm the best" isn't materially different from "I deserve Miran more than Shuji because I worked hard and that should be rewarded more than his slacker/coasting through life (which ignores that Shuji's circumstances are his own and are not there just because he's lazy/apathetic, but that's understandable.) Especially since we just had the "I understand that you have someone else that you like" line from him earlier in the confession. Awareness that is directly at odds with his "I'm entitled to have you" attitude which entirely ignores Miran as a person instead of a trophy/reward.

It's just shit writing. Tropes and cliches and standard developments chucked onto the page without thought to the composition of the whole.

Jokes aside, why do this conflict at the end of the story? This is the second to last chapter, the focus should be on the protagonist, showing how much he's grown since the first chapter and what the future will hold for them, this is not the time to focus on a background character that will get rejected either way!

It's great that the protagonist is deciding to be more proactive and chasing after Miran, but really he hasn't done anything throughout the entire story, and yet again at the finale, he's just standing there while Miran and a background character carry the plot on their backs!

I bet this wasn't planned to be the end. Either the announcement that they were wrapping up came too late to change course and get to a better stopping point (because as an adaptation it can't just adjust the story too much to force/make an ending where there is none) or the ending announcement came and the author decided "nah, fuck it. If they're going to cancel this and it's just a novel ad I'm gonna let the arc play out as it's been scripted and who cares what wreckage is left over."
