never thought i'd see a manga title use "saudade" in it, honestly it's what drew me in. for anyone wondering, it's a portuguese word that's untranslatable in english, which means "an emotional state of melancholic or profoundly nostalgic longing for a beloved yet absent someone or something" (wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saudade).
it's deeply rooted in lusophone culture due to to centuries of separation and displacement. portugal was a seafaring empire for hundreds of years, and people routinely left home knowing they might never return, which made absence and longing a constant part of everyday life. that feeling carried over into other portuguese-speaking places too, especially brazil, through colonization, forced migration, and later waves of immigration. if anyone's interested there's some more interesting information under the wikipedia page i linked.
it really is a striking word choice for a story about not fitting into the world and longing for something/someone you can’t quite reach anymore.
