@Skankyslack My understanding (and I could be wrong) in Japan is that it is common practice to be at work before your boss comes in, and leave only after your boss has left. Failure to do so would be a sign of laziness or lack of commitment to your job. This is a separate set of expectations, culturally based and unspoken - hence the source of frustration for an Aspie. Individuals with Asperger's have problems with "unspoken codes", they have difficulty with inferring the expectations of others - you need to tell them clearly.

This spoke to my soul, specially all that "arrive early-leave late" nonsense part.

I too prefer things being precise and elaborated, especially when you are doing paid work. Should just be the norm.

The Japanese corporate culture is a nonsensical hell-hole that needs to change if it wants to stay relevant.

I think in this case surely society is wrong too... if you're done with your work, what's the point to staying late??
But it's always annoying when no one explains. I've had to learn to be really observant about what the social procedure is for things. But I think it's also kind of an advantage sometimes! It's easier to be a little bold if you can't pick up people judging you.
(this is a skill that should be used for good, not evil, of course. Bold/=/a jerk.)

It honestly feels like society is wrong(or at least not right) in most cases. Seldom do I learn what is normal(and why) and think the reasoning makes sense. Pretending to be neurotypical in daily life feels exhausting and, often, fruitless.

Being expected to come in early and stay late for unpaid work isn't "common sense", it's employee exploitation. I don't know about Japan, but in Canada at least, that shit's illegal. In my old job, we had to clock in to start being paid as soon as we arrive, and leave as soon as our time was up, because the boss didn't want to pay overtime and was worried about being investigated for that.

For all those in the comments wondering about why she's expected to come in early and leave late - that is, sadly, the work culture in Japan. It's toxic, ubiquitous, and one of their biggest modern social problems.

Source: the last year I've spent living and working in Japan, and the multiple Japanese friends that have confirmed this personally.

My people long age recognized that some people do not fit into ordinary expectations, ask deep questions & seem unusually intelligent, have a deep focus & ritualistic natures, & are not lusty. Modern society treats us like a nuisance & calls it Autism Spectrum Disorder; but my ancestors gave us an important role & called us shamans.
