The thing about which I personally can't understate my joy is the, er, healthy marital relationship between the duke and duchess.I cannot understate the amount of joy I had at seeing her boys show up to back her up. Though I feel we will get into another sort of petty squabbling soon enough.
Alas, they should have been trying for years now, but there are no results. So, there is a problem of some sort. Of course many do try for years and then succeed, so nothing is lost yet, apart from a little bit of time. But on the other hand, these folks aren't living our modern times with the general fertility level on the decline, so either a genetic lower fertility condition is affecting either one of them or their compatibility genetically isn't great. The thing about which I personally can't understate my joy is the, er, healthy marital relationship between the duke and duchess.
You're missing the obvious alternative: They only recently consummated their marriage.Alas, they should have been trying for years now, but there are no results. So, there is a problem of some sort. Isn't a severe lack of libido also a problem causing low fertility? Who knows what would be causing it. Maybe the stress from Clarisse's situation. While I don't believe they view her as their own child, she's still something close to it, yet the duke knows the king expects him to execute her in a few years. Perhaps they simply can't make a child of their own when the duke knows all too soon he will need to kill someone who's almost like his own child. If he's already planning not to kill Clarisse, it will bring with it the other problem of a very uncertain future after refusing the king's order. You're missing an obvious possibility: They only recently consummated their marriage.
In his defense on the last part, he's like the only one of the main characters not aware of her execution coming. He thinks it would bring undue stress due to his own experiences for the rest of her (presumably long) life. Her own experiences however, she's basically lived under the impression she was never going to live a long life in the first place and her current "extended" time is actually a gift since she'd have been killed by now from her brother had the story not kicked offFunnily enough this whole stressful situation wouldn't even exist if Clarisse just told folks she's an extremely rare golem master, a national asset that definitely wouldn't be killed, unless the king is batshit crazy and better off removed from the throne. But no, thanks to Noah, who adviced her otherwise solely due to his personal experiences that have got nothing to do with Clarisse, she's staying silent.
That's indeed true, but personally I'd expect more from Noah, even if he's lacking that single bit of information. He probably has as good education as that kingdom can offer anyone. His circumstances are also extraordinary, forcing him to grow up much sooner than most. He most certainly didn't grow up spoiled and narrow-minded. So, despite his still relatively young age, he shouldn't automatically assume that he can compare his own situation to those of others. Just because he suffered from unkind treatment among the mages doesn't mean Clarisse shouldn't be allowed to make her own decision. His advice to her was all about himself, not her.In his defense on the last part, he's like the only one of the main characters not aware of her execution coming. It’s been like 5 years since they became a ”real” husband and wife, do you think they only just started fucking? You're missing the obvious alternative: They only recently consummated their marriage.
You also have to remember, for the first 3 years, they didn't basically interact due to reasons; The Duke not wanting to force anything because it was basically a forced marriage, and thus coming off cold, the Duchess at the time, was more concerned being found out being 'fake' then anything. It’s been like 5 years since they became a ”real” husband and wife, do you think they only just started fucking?
They could be/have been using contraceptives, to avoid having to split their time between Clarisse and hypothetical baby, or any other possible reason for that matter. It’s been like 5 years since they became a ”real” husband and wife, do you think they only just started fucking?
There was a 6 year time skip between now and the first part of the story where they became more open with each other. It’s not like after realizing they love each other they waited 6 years to have sex for no reason. You also have to remember, for the first 3 years, they didn't basically interact due to reasons; The Duke not wanting to force anything because it was basically a forced marriage, and thus coming off cold, the Duchess at the time, was more concerned being found out being 'fake' then anything.
The next two years since Clarisse appeared did involve breaking down the walls around each other, getting to know each other, and etc-
Not to mention with Clarisse presence being their child anything but blood, it lit the flame so to say.
He was, but one thing I'd like to point out is it wasn't just "growing up" he did, but rather the fact even as a kid, he has been put in life threatening situations, which also tends to lead to trauma. And the thing about that is it isn't just maturity, but stagnation that it puts you through (I bring up as a good example, Akemi Homura) where it's very difficult to move on from that (on top of that, the mages tend to be quite stuck-up and prickish in general with how quickly they changed their tone to Clarisse seeing she's a friend of his). That's indeed true, but personally I'd expect more from Noah, even if he's lacking that single bit of information. Of course I also blame Clarisse for keeping her execution secret, but at the end of the day, she's a really pitiful person due to her past and future. As long as she never questions her own looming execution, let alone try to escape from it, it's impossible to expect anything from her.
