I think there were also free gladiators but most of them were slaves. But yeah, pankration fighters were athletes.

Ehm, I mean he pretty much was an absolute beast during the Maximum Tournament, that definitely falls in his ballpark. Just because he is civil outside of the ring doesn't mean he can't go hogwild on you if you challenge him
