Been re-reading this for a while, and the only explanation, in my mind, is that Sakuraba has (SPOILERS: which is pretty obvious in latter chapters) an inferiority complex towards Ichijou ever since he lost to him in elementary school. That's why he acts the way he does, since he's trying to prove to everyone, even to himself, that he's the best.
