...I'm gonna need a kind soul to explain this one to me.
Yeah this is the first time I didn't understand one of her chapters...
I think this one more than any of them highlights the implicit (But still obviously worth while) tragedy of love between a carnivore and a herbivore.
He implicitly desires meat, but indulging in that will ultimately damage the purity of their relationship. She cares for him the best she can manage, but it doesn't bring him the true freedom and fulfilment he'd have if he indulged, and instead simply increases their time together. This isn't a bad thing, nor is it portrayed as one. Both sides want to make the other happy after all. But in indulging in synthetic meat and immediately perking up, it creates a rift in their bond. His life was extended by her care, but it wasn't fulfilled by it. She would have gladly fed him herself, but it would ruin their peace to do so. Neither of them really talked about it because obviously nobody wants to hurt the one they love, but it still caused that rift. If they had discussed it earlier, they would've been happier. But they were still happy together regardless, and that's all that really matters.
This could probably be about a lot of things, like hospice care or the simple indulgence in a vice/hobby that shortens one's lifespan but still provides fulfilment. But at its core it's about the things people do to keep love alive. It's not sunshine and rainbows all the time after all, and there are many things that are hard about it. But it's often worth the effort.
