Calling yakiniku "Japanese bbq" is a bit of a cultural steamroller. It's really Japanese-style KOREAN bbq. The adaptation from korean bbq to yakiniku is far, FAR less than the adaptation of Chinese lāmiàn to modern Japanese ramen, so I don't think it's at all fair to just declare it to be a Japanese cuisine. I say this as a massive weeb who loves everything Japanese lol.
