The setting seems to be inspired by oldschool dungeon crawlers, though, but that's fine. Wizardry especially, what with the "failed resurrection turns you to ashes" stuff.

It's 100% cribbing from Wizardy; the Softalk All-stars (the canonical party to clear Wizardy 1 and the toughest opponents in Wizardy 4) were the group that recovered the MC in Chapter 0.

About Wizardy resurrections (spoilers just in case it actually becomes a plot point):

The basic resurrection spell is Di, and is the spell you can pay the Temple of Cant to cast on you. Success is determined by the Devotion/Piety stat of the caster, as well as their level. It ALSO checks the Luck stat of the person you are attempting to raise. Failure turns the corpse into ashes.

Resurrection from Ashes IS possible; however it requires a much higher level Priest who can cast Kadorto or a much larger sum of gold at the Temple. Failing to resurrect ashes results in the character being Lost and permanently unrecoverable.

yes, implication is that he is super strong since he got to the deepest part before the other party which thought they were first into the deepest part of the dungeon.

Maybe he is the final boss of the dungeon but something happened and he died. Maybe the same person as the protagonist of Wizardry 4?
