I actually really like the mom. It's easy for her type of character to come off as annoying, but I think the Author does a good job of contrasting her to her daughter.

Yikes. Kazuki thinks that Moeka is running away, not caring about her prospects because she's unwilling to try. When Moeka brushes her off, she feels hurt because she thinks Moeka doesn't appreciate her efforts or want to pursue Kazuki, whether that'd be in status or going to Tokyo.

Moeka believes that her future is already written in stone; she thinks she doesn't have enough talent to succeed in college, nor the tuition to spend on an uncertain future. It's not surprising considering Hana is a construction worker and her mother was a prostitute/relied on her boyfriends' money.

They both have reasonable justifications; it's not easy to share your childhood abuse that you've been suppressing for years, out of emotional numbness. Although Kazuki is being insensitive, and she occasionally dishes out a snarky comment, we naturally want to deter our friends from bum-dum because we care a lot. It is repeatedly emphasized that Kazuki doesn't know the extent of Moeka's history. Kazuki's main character flaw is not just her naivety, but the delivery of her good intentions. Kindness without consideration will always lead to misconstruction of good intentions.
