You might not know how the real world works if you think that way.
The first thing that could happen is... he could be stalked and followed by thieves or people wanting to know where or how he was able to obtain those gold coins. The clerks and others in that same store at the time will grow curious or jealous of him. Not only would the bad guys look for him, the "good" guys in the government would also suspect how he got his gold coins. They don't just appear anywhere. There is a reason why gold that is uncertified is difficult to sell in large batches. If he only sells a few coins, it would be okay, but if he sells too much... the government will look into him and his secrets. He could be accused of being a thief and other things too. It's a lot of trouble.
