The pacing and the narrative focus are scuttling pretty badly and have been for quite some time now.
After the confession, twice as much time passed before the last chapter than between Christmas and the confession. I don't know what you mean by the focus of the norm, but just a reminder that Kyotaro and Yamada have personal conflicts that are also at least partially related to their relationship. Also, each chapter is somehow related to both of them and the main plot, as usual.

One of the boy/friendgroup characters that disappeared cuz the writer got bored of them.
All characters except for the two MCs appear only when their appearance has some relevance to the story of these two. Even this band arc from volume 12 is actually more significant for Kyo and Anna than some people thinks here.

what significance did it have (that warranted several chapters)?

also that’s just bad managing of side character. I shouldn’t have to wrack my brain for something I read back in 2019 to understand what’s going on now. If you’re not gunna commit to using them, then make less side characters and more one-offs.

At least for the last 12 months, certain themes have been on repeat: Let's not meet/meet anyway, can we stay together?/we'll stay together!/can we stay together?? and awkwardness/greater intimacy/return to same awkwardness. Other than that, there have been a few random chapters about nothing in particular and the band arc which took up an entire third of the year's overall story.

So, the last year was just a recycling of issues they've already faced, miscellaneous asides and the awful band story about characters no one cares about. IMO, that's the definition of a struggling narrative.

Ya it feels like the characters finished their arcs and aren’t evolving anymore too. If you grabbed Kyo from like chapter 100 and put him here, he’d probably act the exact same.

you can run a romance on slice of life autopilot for a bit but eventually you have to introduce drama that actually matters. The band arc was just the tipping point for what a lot of people were already thinking.
