More specifically, it's called a koteka, made from specially grown gourds, and used by several different peoples in the highlands of New Guinea. Some people still wear them today, although not many.

The "dasa" on page 9, if a phonetic rendering of the original text, is likely an emphatic abbreviation of "dasai" (meaning "lame").

Similarly, I think the "pupuh" on page 14 is meant to be the sound of failing to suppress laughter.
