I haven't read the pre-serialized version [yet], so this is coming with the thought that if the point at which he narrates about the high potion is different, it could be that here with it being the last thought before passing out it wasn't being considered in full. Or the author could change the point at which he finds out about that aspect to when he goes to inquire about it.
