Which if precisely the same as ditching your friend because they are no longer useful to you.
How ?
I mean, you do realize they're not dicking around, adventuring for the fun of it ?
Think about it. A bunch of individuals, who're supposed to be (among) the top dogs, the best of the best, managed to fail several quest in a row.
This means that the quest they undertake are that difficult.
Take for example a start-up.
I'm fairly sure you're already aware of how hard creating a successful start up is.
Being friend is nice and all, but what you're saying is kind of arguing that you should keep incompetent friends in your startup in spite of the fact that it gives extra-work to you the rest of your team and that, with no hope of your friend ever getting better.
What Douglas did was trying to remain in the startup while knowing he'll only get worse, meaning he also knew that he'll make the others work harder and harder to make up for him and while fully knowing how hard working in a startup is in the first place and that just because the paycheck is nice.
The quests they accept match or are a little beyond their current level, they could loose their lives at every turn, and yet you think they should've kept Douglas around, when he had this curse ?
I'm not arguing that his teammates aren't asses, but I do understand how they might come to resent him.
