Don't have source material at hand to compare them but this manga is an adaptation, so either:

A) Source material goes like that for this event and no changes were made. Manga didn't change a bit.
B) Whole situation got compressed for the manga adaptation and this was the end result. Perhaps we missed a better explanation/exposition from source material?
