I'm not saying he is right, but it's not that simple from his perspective. He seems to love his mom and at least care for his grandma, if be a bit annoyed by the circumstance. He is close with his girl childhood friend. If he were to leave, he would be stuck with those feelings of abandoning his mom and grandma. He would have to deal with that for as long as he lives. If he commits suicide? That's all gone. You don't worry when you aren't alive anymore. You don't have to think "dang, whats mom gonna do without me?" every time you wake up.
I say this as somebody that has fought with suicidal ideation and attempts for years. The biggest draw of it to me is just... having it all be over. No more rent. No more job. No more bills. No more worries. Just nothing.
Of course, he can find ways to overcome this, but that's going to be what the story is about, probably.
