No joke, I've always suspected the town is some sort of Silent Hill-esque cursed town that spreads some sort of "despair curse" on it's inhabitants.

As if it chooses a vessel of despair to be it's herald, to spread as much misery as possible.

And to make sure it's victims cannot escape the town.
