Mixed towards very negative.
It's quite strange to find harsh criticism on X, but this chapter has sure pissed lots of readers.

I enjoy x/1999 with all of my heart but it is known that it was stopped because of the earthquakes at the time along with it being "too violent." Well.... I did see a recent tweet saying it brings "more bad urban stereotypes" so yeah

Thanks for the TL!

Everyone's discussion is so great this time I don't have anything meaningful to add, but can we also talk about how adorable baby Chako is in that panel I miss seeing everyone looking happy
In my case, a thing i forgot to mention, but in the panels where Reiji was standing still with a curious gaze, looking at the 4th wall while Gen and Chako kept walking in their peaceful and unkempt town, like looking at a shellshocked Nagi (and considering all things, Nagi may not even be her real name) who never looked away from the destruction and chaos may have a symbolism and metaphor of Reiji entering to her heart and wanting to know more.

Most of us know Nagi feels like nobody loves her since ch16 by comparing Reiji's situation to hers, and this chapter only confirms that. Maybe Nagi's reasons to die are because she wants to meet her family and friends in the afterlife, survivor's guilt they say.

While Reiji's reasons to die are because he wants to run away from a love already confirmed as false (Mom used him as a sub and made others hate him so Reiji would never leave her, not out if love, but of him being the vessel of her hatred towards everything, Gen wanted to be Yuko, Chako used him as an instrument that would guide her to Esemori and took their friendship for granted and Yuri... Yuri just wants to catch up with her lost teenage years using him. Not surprising he wants to die.

The point of the flashback may also point at Nagi finding out Reiji may only have had everything she lost on the surface, but, on the substance, he also started to lose that thing since the moment Yuko's dad died, that was the moment Yuko started to chain Reiji to herself, with every attempt from his closest relatives (Hermano's family, Kazu) making Yuko cut ties with her bro for good, turn Masaharu against Reiji and traumatize Gen. A common ground despite of their opposite realities: one had everything, but nature stripped those things away from her, while the other basically had nothing in substance, despite of physically having it. And the people who want to help Reiji doesn't know the core of his suffering, that's why Reiji considers them as dazzling people he can't take their hands.

The most surprising thing is that Yuko never tried to get a clutch into Chako, although it's known why: her family despises the Kuroses, so it would have been useless and would have had the cops involved, that's why Yuko used Yuri as an instrument to keep a leash on Reiji instead, and she, unless Reiji mans up, is succeeding if we go by the fact Reiji is engaged.

I'm not sure Reiji has the mental capability to be better anymore, he's almost always stuck, if not physically, then mentally.
Those few chapters he had clarity and actually started trying to be better was only because he got a damn break from being stuck physically and started working on himself instead.

Now he feels stuck physically and mentally, the weight of understanding his reality crushed his spirit.
Nagi's appearance started breaking him out of his abyss and gave him hope, but it's not enough for him to love her because deep down he just views Nagi as a way to escape his hell, even though he loves and cares about her, I think the call of death is much more important to him than his feelings for her.

Reiji is broken, he's mentally unwell to a potentially hopeless extent.
He never really did anything drastic himself, even Chako was the one who got him to go to Tokyo, he's always just been there to tag along, tell people what they want to hear, or defy people.

Even if someone genuinely loved him, I don't think he'd believe it or accept it.
He's so wrapped up in his own misery, he can't accept anyone because he feels that no one genuinely cares about him, (which is quite valid considering his childhood, although wrong).
And even those trying to genuinely help he feels are too good for him, and instead of explaining everything to help them understand his issues, he just pushes them away.

He'd rather sink than swim, because it takes more energy to swim, even if sinking kills him.
While from a psychological and logical standpoint, it all makes sense, but from a emotional standpoint, his lack of willingness to be better and be his own person is infuriating.

I came for this Manga after some of the earliest seggs scenes being posted in some random Facebook group. It is so good, so grounded in certain senses, closer to reality mb. After reading this, all those sweet romance mangas just feel so delusional and worthless to read, unless it is some crazy rom-com like Kaguya or 100 Girlfriends. I really enjoyed every chapter.
