Duke here was definitely planning on killing his son or at least locking him up for life.

I tried an online AI/MTL tool recently. The translation quality was pretty bad, but it was nearly instant and it did the typesetting.

In 5 years, the average idiot will probably be able to convert manga/manhwa/manhua/comic chapters to their preferred language in a single click, running locally on their computer. Only access to the raws will matter, and while Japan is actively trying to take raw websites down (definitely the JP language UI ones), that's only scratching the surface of how pirates can distribute the material.
While, that may be true of most languages, I feel like Japanese is too context for AI to give a completely accurate translation without losing something important

Your own sentence just now makes no sense and you don't seem to grasp why your translations are bad, it's not the AI, nothing is getting lost. It's because your English skills aren't developed enough to be able to tell you why it's wrong.

I feel like Japanese is too context for AI

This is not an English sentence, the world should be "contextual" not context.

You made this same mistake in the manga. So so many times. Let's look at one example:

I've live a too leisure life.

This makes no sense "I have" and "live" do not go together you need to transform it into the past tense so "lived" the words "too leisure" are not compatible grammatically you simply can't add these two together, this is like saying "very muchly" to indicate something big, it maybe works in your native language but in English you need relationships between these two words. So you need another way to express that "He has lived a life of wasting time." You also don't understand the world leisure that you or the AI has chosen has connotations of being earned or enjoyed. You need a word that going to portray his slothfulness, you need a negative word for leisure so a world like idleness or even more down the scale laziness. So let's check what the scale of this should be in the Japanese.

自堕落な生活を送っておりました - I was living a self-indulgent (or lazy) lifestyle.
自堕落 - self-indulgent; undisciplined; slovenly; debauched; negligent, so basically a hedonistic lifestyle.

For starters I have no idea why you switched the words around when in the Japanese one these 3 are separate speech bubbles.
You said that Japanese is a context heavy language aka contextual, yet you're ignoring the context of the speech bubble that represent individual thoughts or sentences.
He is recounting his bad deeds and then he concluded that his life was a waste. He is showing his willingness to repent.

Now the next step to determine the politeness level, now this is very far beyond you right now but consider it in the future, your text needs to match the level of what was said in the Japanese text. What makes a word sound “formal” , “casual” or “polite”?
What words would a noble say to a noble? How would he define what he has done? Would it be Lazy? Undisciplined? Hedonistic? Self-indulgent? But let's keep it simple.

夜遅くまで外出し - I've been staying out late at night...
朝に寝るような・・・ - I have oversleep in the morning...
自堕落な生活を送っておりました - I was living a self indulgent lifestyle.

So we turn the
"I've live a too leisure life. "
Into
"I have lived a life of self indulgence."

Japanese is my 5th Language and English is my 3rd it's not that difficult. What I'm seeing is someone rushing things, not understanding what they're doing and then not correcting them. You really need to find someone who is willing to help you with Quality Checking.

We live in an age where you can Google Lens the entire text, then use ChatGPT and your brain to assembled the translations pretty easily. You can even ask ChatGPT/Grook/Google/Microsoft or others to make it more casual or English like.

Like seriously try putting in some more effort it will lead you to a great understanding of the languages you are using.

Don’t forget to feed the QC.
Our TL usually doesn't produce this bad of a chapter, he's, arguably, the best TL we have here so I was really confused, too. I had a talk with him and we're checking if it's some PR over changing stuff to worse quality or he just had a bad streak of chapters in this story

Wait what, an AI tool that does the typesetting as well? I'd like to see this, do you have a link?

I'm not sure which one I tried, but it was something like one of these.
https://www.aimangatranslator.com/
https://scan-translator.com/

The scheme is they allow some images to be translated for free without login, which I tried out on some of the raws for this (the translation was bad). Then they try to get you into subscription plans. They are acting as a middleman for AI models like Gemini, GPT-4o or whatever, which you might be able to use directly for this purpose at a lower price.

It only does the bare minimum of "typesetting" and may cut into the text bubbles, but it replaces the text in the image instantly. It's been years since we've seen demos of smartphones translating text in real time by using the camera (augmented reality), so it's not surprising that this exists.

Bleh, pass on trying it myself then but thanks. Honestly I've never used AI so it's kinda wild hearing the extra things it can do. I'm an editor (cleaner/typesetter/light redrawer) myself, though by the sounds of it AI will never truly be able to capture the "human touch" that can be done. Or I hope not, I want humans to stay relevant.

The dad feels like an asshole. It’s no wonder the MC was the way he was when THIS is what passes for an attempt at a basic parent/child relationship. Even an absentee/dead dad would be better since at least the absentee dad wouldn’t be jumping to such vile conclusions about the child he’s utterly failing to raise and provide a good example for while also prepping to beat them into submission for being talented at something.

Lotta people talking shit about the quality of the translations, but they end every chapter with a recruitment ad. If you don't like it, fix it.

Or just keep complaining in the comments about the translation you're reading for free

Why would Herbert have turned into a swine if the parents were excellent? They had to be somewhat bad, to fail so miserably. We know for sure the duke is simply too busy to have spent much time at all with the kid. What little time he did, he could have only reserved the time if Herbert achieved something, giving Herbert an impression he will only meet his father and gain his recognition if he wins competitions or such, which was a step toward ruining his personality. The mother might have a fragile mental health, by the looks of it. Perhaps she was occasionally sent to some mountain retreat to deal with it, like folks tended to do back in the day, with many ailments they couldn't figure out. When Herbert started to turn bad, the dude began to meet him less and only to scold him, until he stopped entirely.

Now his thought about the need to stop Herbert was the duke thinking, not the father. If Herbert had learned a magic nobody potentially can fight against, yet is still an arrogant, cruel bastard, it's the government's responsibility to do something about it. A duke is a part of the government.

Well as someone who recently stumbled upon this and couldn't understand half of what was said, I'd say the criticism is valid in this case.
Although you are right too in that people should understand this is a free contribution to the community and be more constructive or offer help if they can instead of just complaining.

As for the translators, hopefully you can improve on this for next time or feel free to hit me up if you need help as I work on some series too on my free time

I don't recall if it was this manga in particular or not.. but I'm pretty sure several people, including myself, have commented that they'd be willing to give a PR/QC to this group, but that generally goes without a response.

Either way, instead of leaving things to your TL, you should -always- send the TL'd/Typeset chapter first to a PR, who should correct any mistakes they find by sending it back to the Typesetter/TL, then once it passes PR, it should then go to a completely different person to QC it. It's all about the checks and balances for that kinda thing - the more eyes on it before it goes up, the higher chance you're going to get even more of a reader base who is willing to help.

One suggestion I may have would be to not just have a recruitment post on the chapters themselves, but to also post it within the comments of the manga chapters you're uploading, then keep an eye on those comment sections.. because the people here in the comments are the ones who are actively reading the story, and they're already invested enough to come to the comment section to drop a comment.. so they may already be more willing to assist with the Proof Reading/Quality Checks for this manga itself.
