My brother in loli, I agree with both your idea, and the spirit of the idea, but you are seeking intelligence from a turnip when you try to apply logic to a story of this ilk; there are hundreds of better ways to do almost any task other than the way the characters choose to do in a story like this!
The Main Character (or MC) will often be an idiot, while pretending it was the "only way" to fulfill his intentions... even if the fate of doing it the rational, intelligent, or even sane way would merely be "other people knowing he was able to complete the task!"

It makes no sense!
Beginning to end, half of these stories make no fucking sense at all!

So believe me, I agree!
But it's a suckers bet trying to search for logic in any of it.

tbf, in a world of magic, what if the specific nutrients aren't stored in the soil, but the environment itself? We already have plants irl that are very sensitive to the environment (heat, humidity, etc.), just not as extreme as 1 day

Could be. It will also be the first plant to go extinct in that world, with such strict growing requirements, yet such an important role for medicine.
