I don't know what to say about this, kinda shocking that in an different era people can be so irrational and unreasonable, but I can empathize with such insanity.

Considering the election result fiasco in US 2019, this statement doesn't age well, misinformation and misguided people were sadly always part of history and now more than ever seems to be a rising issue.
I fear the day, we can barely recognise the difference between a deep fake and an actual video 😰
The illusion the doctor was under was the mystery behind Mariana's methods.
He couldn't understand how the things she did (i.e. her treatment for the grandpa or building up the entire village without knowing if the grandpa would ever return) could lead to the outcomes that she wanted (i.e. the grandpa accepting that Japan had lost and the grandpa ending up buried next to her). So the doctor did a bunch of things to help her in order to try to understand.
But that was Mariana's plan all along. She understood that the doctor would help her in order to try to solve the mystery and used it to get him to do what she wanted. It's only after he finished burying the grandpa that the doctor even realized that she was manipulating him the whole time.
