Even though I asked that question, I don't know what "undertones" means. Yuri bait is anything that looks yuri but it's not from the genre, they simply put characters in a panel/scene in a suggestive manner but it turns into nothing. And then, when a series is labelled as yuri you can have everything, nothing or something in between, but as the matter fact they intend to showcase it as such. For instance, Lyro-Reco is yuri for me and every single doujinshi artist that makes it a reality because we have yuri goggles. Instead, Hibike! Euphonium is yuri bait because the author puts in that illusion but there's nothing actually in there. And here, an example of a series that it's tagged as yuri in MangaDex but it's an entire joke:
Undertones is when the story isn't mainly about (yuri) but it exists in the background if you pay attention to it. It's not necessarily a bad thing but can be messy with tagging and viewer expectations. (this can happen with hetero romance too)
Bait is when the creator purposefully adds hints/tropes of (yuri) with no intention to explicitly address or progress the relationship, with the hope of drawing in an audience.
They can both apply to the same work, or not.
Examples? None. Source? I made it up.

I mean, supposing I picked the story because of the romance (even with straight romance): I'd like to see progress. You know: hand-holding, hugs, kisses, confessions, and dating. If none of these things happen, then why the hell am I even reading this?

Now, if you aren't interested in the romance, then I can understand how any hint of it would be a nice bonus

I was mostly referring to [action adventure story] where the main character has a love interest but the actual story is about saving the world or whatever. Even if they get together in the end, it's not a huge aspect of the story
Also I personally don't care about the post-dating parts of romance as much but I know this is an unpopular opinion

So my yuri glasses are someone's else undertones?
Methode is the most yuri character of the series, she's a disciple of Serie just because she loves her, but so does with cute (and smol) girls in general. And yes, Fern is jealous:

I guess.
But depending on the viewer's level of delusion, yuri (or yaoi) glasses can find content in places with no undertones, and thus begin the battles.
