Well, that was an engaging and informative hour. And from someone whose delivery isn't overstated, so I can actually stomach watching them for more than ten seconds.

As for the current environment of moral panic here... politics talk is verboten, but everything is political... huh.

I guess everything's fine here, as far as I can say.

Well, when it comes to playing tabletop RPGs I've never been frowned upon, from outsiders it was more curiosity or envy because we were having a good time. Here press had some years that stirred up things a bit but since it became a great business market (at first basically thanks to tabletop wargames). So yes, they simplify things by saying "if you can make money with it then it can't be bad".

Yeah, I think the whole "D&D = satanism" was both overblown at the time and gets skewed out of proportion now. I was raised Baptist (though I'm getting better), and I don't really recall hearing about this much as a kid in the mid-to-late 80's at church - I certainly was never warned about avoiding D&D or any of that (though I may have been a bit too young for that to be something that would have come up).

A couple guys I used to game with were 10 years or so older than I was and were started playing in the late 70's, and so would have been right in the thick of all of this. When we talked about this, they said they never had any problems. Apparently one of their moms even took the books to the pastor at their church to have him read through them, and as he was giving them back he commented that he was going to get a set to use to play with his kids because it looked like fun.

Fun side note - the video mentioned the infamous Dark Dungeons 'Chick Tract' that Jack Chick drew. In the original version of that, there was a footnote that classified Tolkien and CS Lewis as 'occult material'... which - given Lewis was one of the foremost Christian apologists of the mid-20th Century, and Tolkien was in large part responsible for Lewis's conversion to Christianity - is hilariously misguided.

Good to know it was just a good time for you. In our case the "Satanical" part was quite laughable, it was just the "becoming that imaginary persona", something I always found curious is that here nobody (among religious parents) go to talk with a holy man about family stuff, they just need them for ceremonies and confessing at most. So basically if someone didn't get to try roleplaying games was because "the parents didn't want to buy them unrelated school books" or something close to that.

I had that, it's a common side effect. The solution for me was to stop taking it. Shrug!
