thoughts on mario kart world for anyone who has a switch 2?
it's a pretty good game. with the introduction of forward drifts, rail grinding and wall riding, the skill ceiling is much higher than previous mario kart games.

as for online play, i'm sure you've already heard that update 1.1.2 completely fucked up everything. there are 30 3-lap tracks in the base game right now (i.e. 'traditional' mario kart courses), and a ton of 'intermission' courses (where you drive from one of the thirty courses to another in the open world). before the recent update, when players voted on the next track in the predominant online gamemode, the Random option would only ever land on one of the 30 3-lap tracks. but after the update it can now land on one of the intermissions, of which there are many. literally no one is happy about this change and ideally nintendo should make the main online gamemode just be 3-lap tracks since the small subset of players who actually prefer the straight lines that are intermission tracks deserve to be spit on in public.

the free roam mode where you get to explore the open world is a great feature, however it could benefit from more cumulative rewards for exploration, of which there are none currently. i personally think that even a quasi-story mode would have been a good addition (think something akin to Mario Super Sluggers, now that game did it right). the general design of free roam feels a lot like Kirby Air Ride's 'Free Run' mode. has anyone here played Kirby Air Ride?

the atmosphere in Kirby Air Ride's Free Run mode allows the player to hop off their vehicle and explore every nook and cranny of the game's urban landscape. the city map feels cozy but empty, with only the occasional UFO or meteor shower occurring to break the monotony. driving alone through streets where the only sounds are the looping background track and hum of your vehicle makes for a liminal experience—there are no NPCs to speak of or to, no preprogrammed objectives, and no moving traffic in an environment that would normally have a high population density. even the collectible boxes from the game's City Trial mode are not present, leaving the player with no tangible power-ups/progression. despite (or perhaps because of) all this, Kirby Air Ride's Free Run mode is deeply beloved by those who played it near its release over 20 years ago. the game's city is small and contained, making its loneliness all the more immediate. it managed to make such a large impression with so little, which is why Kirby Air Ride is inarguably the true predecessor to the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (often cited as the "Greatest Game of All Time").

I agree with your multiplayer points, but disagree with your open world points. I think they could bring back more skill into Mario Kart and make the free roam more valuable by just giving stickers individual skills. Have the online be like Smash Bros, with competitive and casual lobbies. In the casual lobbies, frantic items and intermission tracks are possible.
In the competitive lobbies, normal item distribution with no intermissions possible.

As for the skill stickers idea, make the ones themed around coins give you a minor boost (like you start the ALL of the races with 5 coins, not just the first one) or the ones themed around driving a certain distance give you better handling. It can definitely be workshopped.

And also competitive lobbies have sticker skills turned off. Forgot to say that. But should probably be a given. .... Yup!

as they are now, the stickers are indeed a big letdown. all i really want tbh is a better collection system. seeing how many stickers i don't have, as well as stickers/rewards for cumulative free roam achievements (rather than only a bunch of individual stickers for each and every small puzzle) would go a long way.

do i think they'll ever implement these changes? no. but an onee-san can dream :nyoron:

I think it's a missed opportunity to not have a better way to display your coolest stickers. You can only pick one, and it shows up on the leaderboard but pretty much nowhere else.

Imagine if it was like DS and your kart had a giant version of the sticker on the front (instead of character symbol), sides (the only one actually in the game), and maybe even tires?

Also an idea I just thought up, why not add different models or characters to collect to serve as your pitcrew? When someone looks up your tag online, it shows them your pitcrew (with 3 assignable character slots and one slot for your favorite kart, and maybe a few sticker slots?)

The characters would be collected by doing certain tasks as them in the open roam or by winning a knockout tour with them. The karts would be knockout tour but also through some other system. Not sure though.

Not to mention the potential of character specific challenges, NPCs, and missions. An example: play the Airship Fortress map as Rocky Wrench without hitting (or getting hit) by any of your fellow Rocky Wrench coworkers.
How about Dino dino jungle themed challenges as Yoshi or Birdo?
Challenges based around eating all the types of food at the Bazaar as Shy Guy, or making a big snow man (Mario 64 reference perhaps) as the little snowman or the penguin?

Literally just one Mario Galaxy referential challenge for Rosalina.

There is opportunity here.

My name is John Angelos Palaiologos Kantakouzenos. I live at 608 Morean monastery no.69, Mystras, Rhomania, 71204. This is my history.
If you're reading this grafmos, I'm probably retired, forced into becoming a monk by the empress Anna of Savoy. Anna has been building a pronoia empire for over a year now and using me as her pawn. Shortly after my 49th birthday, Anna came to me with a rather shocking proposition. She asked that I use my military experience to depose prince John V, which would allow her and Apokaukos to control all the pronoia. Using connections she had made while bedding Andronikos III.

Surprisingly enough, I don't think I've ever played Kirby and The Amazing Mirror so thanks for the recommendation. It kinda reminds me of Kirby Super Star EXTRA and that's a close second for my favorite Kirby game. :salute:

Maybe it's about time all of us become birds. I command all of you to change all your avatars to avian ones in six standard hours.
You first, bird boy.
