From personally experience, only tag a bunch of people if its something for a big event that they are a part of and you want them to see.

You can always write a comment first and then edit in their names, this will not ping them like so:

You are afraid of waking up the people in your list right? I was showing you a method on how to do this without alerting them of your presence.

Also another tid bit, editing in quotes makes it so you don't give them notifications also.

how do you do that?

first, press the reply button to whatever post you wanna edit in

then, in the message draft box, click the two square brackets next to the save icon

then copy the string that vaguely looks like this:
[QUOTE="(user here), post: (post id here), member: (userid here)"]
thing they said
[/QUOTE]

then paste it into the message you wanna edit
