I would argue it's still brave. He could have simply lied, tried to make time, give himself the space to make plans, but instead he basically went "Screw you, just kill me". Spiteful and entitled like your average oligarch, but also brave, even if just out of some insane levels of pride.

It's actually really age and background appropriate how little the MC understands the power he seeks and the mindset of the people who have that power. He was sheltered and went through hell, so he sees the things that were invisible to him, but he's still naive. Of course he wouldn't take a deal, he thinks he can get what he wants with his power because years of experience confirm he can.
