exactly. there's this one novel by a polish sci-fi writer Stanislaw Lem, that does the same thing. extremely well conveying an unfamiliar, confusing future to a time traveler by making it impossible for the reader as well to understand what is happening around the protagonistI'm okay with it for now. My impression is that the story feeling directionless is intentional, since it parallels how Denji himself is lacking direction and has no idea what to do with his life. Everything that had been giving the story it's structure had been removed, and it was those very same things that were providing Denji's goals and structuring his life. The effect is that we kind of get a feel of Denji's mindset.

the book i mentioned is "return from the stars" if i remember it right. but i'm not joking about the difficulty understanding it, it may give you a real migraneThanks for letting me know about this author.
