I think some of y'all are overreacting and labeling Nanao as a plotter.

Nanao could not be any more transparent about her feelings toward Izumi. He is fully aware of them and she continuously tells him she loves him, yet he refuses to cave. Is she supposed to love bomb him until he does? Like she told Amane, is it really such a bad thing to try your best to get the person you like to notice you? If forming alliances to build up Izumi's low self-esteem ends up in him dating her, I think that is a fair way to go about it.

As for the complaint that making her a plotter with ties to the rich girls defeats the purpose of her being the upfront girl, I do not think those two things contradict each other at all. Being upfront was never about having zero strategy. It was about never hiding how she actually feels, and she has never once done that. She tells Izumi she loves him to his face. She does not play coyand she does not make him guess. What she is doing now is simply working with the resources available to her instead of sitting around waiting to be chosen.

Having connections also does not erase who she is. If anything, it shows she is willing to use whatever she has to help the person she cares about, including fixing the self-esteem issues that are clearly holding Izumi back. That reads as devotion, not manipulation. A plotter hides their motives. Nanao announces hers out loud and dares you to argue with them.

So no, in my personal opinion, this does not defeat the purpose of her character. It deepens it. She can scheme and stay honest at the same time. It does not have to be one or the other, and it does not destroy the sanctity of her character as long as her intentions stay genuine and nobody gets hurt along the way.
