They are. It stems from the tale of St. George, Beowulf, and many such Greek myths. The act of stopping a dragon is that of overcoming an insurmountable evil, which is usually presented in a dragon-like form.

Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done, On earth as it is in Heaven" I Hope that makes things clear

小篆 is no joke.
I can't imagine trying to learn all ~10k characters from the 説文解字 just to translate a ritual language in a manga. Especially when it is safe to assume few of the people reading this is Japanese will be able to recognize more than a few characters.
