This entire scenario was just to power up Anna / bring upon this twist.
In any other situation, Allen would not end up dead. This just doesn't mesh well with how the entire story was set up, and stinks of desperation for plot.

True and while I agree that making everyone stupid for the sake or forcing a plot point is bad this one falls on the "so dumb it is cool" category so it is fine.
