Exactly. Solitary confinement can lead to serious and lasting psychological damage. Physical and social isolation, coupled with sensory deprivation and forced idleness, create a toxic combination. Deprive a person of being able to do anything, and he/she will pretty much lose touch with one's morals and would be willing to agree to anything, in order to do something. What's the point of living if that's all you're doing... living?

I think it might be something short of death but it can be brutal

That's actually the best case scenario in this situation, just stay on the sensory deprivation chamber until the protagonist can rescue you.
