But that's the thing, manga and stories tend to prefer to depict torture achieved through physical means, but ignore the more horrendous psychological torture that tends to be more effective because pain is more easily trained against.

It is true that psychological torture is a much longer process, but it's one of the more effective tactics for breaking a person's spirits for brainwashing purposes, so I mostly question it for cases where it's less about interrogation and more about breaking the person to meet certain goals. Like if you're kidnapped by a group for something like indoctrination purposes, you can bet it'll lean more towards psychological torment than physical abuse. Pain can only take you so far in most cases.

Very effective at breaking people tho.

Exactly. Solitary confinement can lead to serious and lasting psychological damage. Physical and social isolation, coupled with sensory deprivation and forced idleness, create a toxic combination. Deprive a person of being able to do anything, and he/she will pretty much lose touch with one's morals and would be willing to agree to anything, in order to do something. What's the point of living if that's all you're doing... living?

This reminds me of the tragic story of that 30-some year old man who recently escaped captivity by his mom/step-mom, something like that. Small room, almost no food. He was well under 100 pounds. It took him around 20 years I think, and he had to start a fire to get out. A haunting experience.

Your eyes can adjust to natural darkness, but not to total darkness devoid of all light. Furthermore, her magic is sealed via the collar, and they've likely used magic to seal all exits also. She would have to, without nourishment, remove the collar, gather up enough energy, and then find a way to break through or unlock various magical and physical locks. This is why submission is equivalent to death. It would have been far, far easier to escape before they locked her up and sealed her magic. Don't ever let someone control you like that.
