The original scanlator hasn’t released new chapters in 3–4 months and actually asked me two months ago not to translate. However, I’m considering continuing the translation anyway (even though my English isn’t perfect, I'm using Gemini) because many readers seem eager for updates.

Honestly I don't understand the whole concept of groups "claiming" a series nor the fans' seeming disgust when another person or group tries to scanlate a series that already has chapters scanlated by another group. The best argument I can come up with is that the existing group might not have the motivation to keep posting their better quality scanlations when someone else is also posting their chapters, but even that feels like a silly argument.

As far as I understand it, people scanlate because they want to. There's nothing wrong with taking months to do a single chapter, but there's also nothing wrong with another person or group picking up a series at the same time. I don't think anyone's getting rich of of any of these scanlations, so it's all about whether or not any given scanlator is able to muster up the time, effort and motivation to do the work. If another person or group who decided to release chapters alongside you makes you lose your motivation to keep going, then I have to wonder if the motivation was shaky to begin with and possibly coupled with a lack of pride in your own work. Especially in a situation where you believe you're releasing better quality chapters, I think that should speak for itself and gather enough of a following who'll want to consume your content. That's worth having pride in and a possible source of motivation. At least in my opinion.

That's all to say that I fully support anyone picking up anything they want to pick up. And if you're feeling self-conscious about your English skills, maybe consider partnering up with a proofreader?

I saw some of those comments after you already seemed to have talked things out with the other group and I'm in full agreement with you: I don't understand the backlash. To the point that I don't want to count myself as part of "you guys". Sadly it's always a very vocal minority that may appear to speak for the rest of the silent majority and screws things up for them. I know that "even if people aren't posting, you do have a lot of supporters" isn't much of a consolation when you can't see it, but in the world of the internet, that's how it is sometimes unfortunately...

That said, I will also respect your decision to not do it if you want to just avoid all the drama. And if you are going to do it, be prepared to ignore the comments with only non-constructive criticism, because preparing for an internet war is not the way to go about it. Your mental health is the most important in this consideration, so please do what you feel the most comfortable doing.
