Allen needs to earn merits to marry Anastasia as he promised her father and earning glory and a noble title in the war is a good way to do so, specially when he also doesnt want for the country (and his family and loved ones included) to be razed to the ground so he would have fought anyways in one way or another.

With the war so inminent a decapitation strike is pointless since the enemy will just get a replacement for the officers slain, specially when they have the advantage in numbers

Yeah, but to be fair, his priorities are utterly backwards. The war isn't ending anytime soon without him acting, so he can get his glory and titles later. His first priority should be getting the girl out and deciding against it will cost him dearly.
