It's fine, the whole point of that series is the astoundingly outrageous levels of consequences that befall everyone who ever looked sideways at the MC.
The ex-gf/childhood friend is just the one cog in that machine of insanity that happened to kick it all off.
The romance angle with the FMC is negligible and only exists to let the MC be blissfully unaware of the calamity befalling nearly every other character in the story.

The romance angle there is negligible at the moment. Trust me when I say that manga hasn't even really begun to tell the whole story yet.

It's important to note that a story can eventually address a similar elephant in the room without every relationship going straight to hell and we'll see that here in about four or five more years.
