On the one hand, Maki letting her know what he saw is indeed an honorable act of honesty. On the other hand, though,

They're actually both being a little dishonest right now, but mostly because they've not yet been fully honest with themselves. Which is probably unavoidable considering they're both entering completely uncharted territory. Umi lacks any experience with having a male friend and Maki lacks any experience with having a friend in general, so the repeated invocation of the word "friend" to cover what's actually happening is a bit exasperating.
