ain't it just a trendy way of using Engrish in modern Japanese sentences?

Too many manga/novels/anime did this to refer ボーイフレンド as "boyfriend(lover)". Not just "kareshi 彼氏”
yeah, but I guess ボーイフレンド has more ambiguous meaning compared to 彼氏 ?

I mean, had her mother used 彼氏, it would have been more obvious that she was teasing Umi by calling Maki her lover.
You know, usually this kind of teasing is always followed by some kind of denial, right?
that's why I was initially surprised that Maki just going in with the flow, as if the boat has sailed

Thanks for the translation plus these kids are some dickheads
It's like, the only decent people in the class are both girls and MC.
She shouldn't have done that. It will make it worse. She doesn't really comprehend the situation. Should have just volunteered
Yeah, she's an airhead, but her heart is pure. It feels like the author wants to highlight the good sides of both girls by making everyone else jerks? I don't know, I was just guessing.

I can see why Yuu is well liked. She's naive, but it makes her straightforward and honest in how she conducts herself in social environments and maintains relationships. There's no games if she likes you, she'll say as much and she speaks her mind openly even if it's the dissenting opinion. That's incredibly rare in high schoolers (even if she's also arguably an idiot that can't read the mood) especially in Japan.

Awful social environments like this are fostered because these minors (who don't fully know better yet (though adults are just as bad)) face no consequences for being terrible people. They pick on someone who isn't going to speak up for themselves and doesn't have anyone that will speak up for them and the rest of the group goes along because they either also want to vent or because they don't want to become targets. Most of the time all it takes is for one person to call them out so the rest of the class feels comfortable speaking out too or show them some level of consequences (like getting them punished by the teacher). Sure sometimes the entire class is rotten or these people are just beyond help, but generally it's the lack of anyone talking back. It's pretty much the same way the internet works. There are no immediate consequences due to the anonymous nature of it and so people are awful.

We saw in an earlier chapter that people are always going to talk behind your back (even if you're incredibly popular), but for everyone to do it in the class is to show a blatant disrespect toward the MC and the hold it because the MC doesn't stand up for himself in these situations and the teacher doesn't care and until recently he didn't have friends that cared

I am thoroughly enjoying both mom's input on this friendship but Yuu is going to find out and it's likely going to be a whole thing

Thanks for the translation!!

But boy oh boy, things are about to get heated. Tho good on Yuu-chan for stating it upfront rather than letting it continue.

Subversion is always a thing and the author clearly did it in this one. Umi clearly knows her mom is teasing her so she's not outright denying it 'cause it's not true (yet) but out of not wanting to escalate the teasing.

But hey, the two are slowly advancing their feelings for one another. Umi not denying it and Maehara not voicing his opposition means we have a ready to sail ship. All that's left is to push that feelings further and sail ahoy we go. :kek:

I don't know why the classes have an assumption he's a slacker just because he's a gloomy person. It's not like he ever being seen ditching any task.
I can understand that it's easy to have prejudices but this kind of trope is overused and kinda unrealistic. Or... maybe Japan culture and mindset is just too different compared to my country.
It's cuz they jealous of him getting the pretty girl's attention so they find something to detract from him. Ngl I'm pretty surprised with a lot of the reactions in the comments, it's not like this kind of class ganging up trope is exclusive to Asia, just that in typical Western stories it's done by the popular kids clique while in Japan the conformist nature stands out more.
